In short: the seven tours differ less in the cheese than in the ride. Two include getting you to the dairy, one explicitly leaves that to you, and four don’t say. The visit itself can be booked direct from the Consorzio for much less than any of them. So sort this list by one thing first: can you get yourself to a rural dairy by nine in the morning, or not.

The column that decides it

I grew up in Langhirano, and my grandfather made cheese at a small dairy in the hills. The first thing he taught me about visiting one was that you go at dawn or you see nothing. The second thing, which he never had to say, was that you need a way of getting there. Most dairies sit out in farmland. A local guide on the Rick Steves forum put it at “at least 90%” of them being far from any bus or train stop. That is one person’s estimate, and it matches what I see.

So here are the seven with the transport column first in my mind. “Not stated” means the listing, as I read it on 28 September 2026, says nothing either way. I would not assume a ride on those four; ask the operator before you pay.

Before any of them: the dairy sells the visit direct

You do not need a tour to watch Parmigiano Reggiano being made. The Consorzio del Formaggio Parmigiano Reggiano has the Consorzio’s own booking page, where you filter by province, language and date. Visits with a tasting run €15 to €25, an extended tour about €35, and one with lunch about €50. You must book ahead everywhere I checked. The €44 one is a dairy visit you reach yourself

From Milk to Wheels is the cheapest tour near Parma and one of the best reviewed, 4.9 from 262. It runs about two hours and you taste three ages. What it does not do is collect you: the listing tells you to take a “15-minute taxi ride or 30-minute bus”. I won’t quote a taxi fare, because I couldn’t verify one. Thea from Denmark described the place as “just outside Parma” and said the guide, Loriso, took them through the whole process. In practice this is the direct-booking experience with an operator’s listing on top, €9 above the top of the direct range.

The one most people book

The €135 Parmigiano and Parma ham tour has 954 reviews at 4.9, far more than anything else here. It is the one that includes pickup and drop-off, it runs about four hours, and it adds the ham. John from Germany left the review I would put on the door of every dairy: “Go early. You see cheese come out of vats.” That sentence is the reason to pay. The other five, briefly

€35, Formigine. The cheapest listing, near Modena rather than Parma, with the most food: three ages of cheese, wine, tigelle and cold cuts. Vivien from Hungary and her companion were the only two on the tour, with a very knowledgeable guide. 4.8 from 115.

€80, the factory visit. Headsets, entry and tastings. Abigail from the United States named the guide, Pietro, and wrote that “the cheese was so good”. 4.9 from 261.

€140, cheese and balsamic. The best rated, 5.0 from 96, and the longest at about six hours. It adds a balsamic vinegar factory, three vinegars and ice cream with 30-year balsamic.

€183, cheese, ham and balsamic. All three, with a private guide and headsets. Alistair from Australia wrote that the guide, Loris, used his connections. 4.9 from 317.

€198, from Bologna. The transfer from Bologna is included, the cheese and ham producers are the day, and lunch is not included. 4.7 from 167.

Arrive on timeThree of the tours on this site, the €80 factory visit, the €135 cheese and ham tour and the €183 cheese, ham and balsamic tour, say in their terms that arriving late counts as a no-show, “non-refundable and non-reschedulable”. The free cancellation up to 24 hours before does not cover it. These are morning tours because the cheese is made in the morning, so leave yourself slack.
